Mungala Iron Resort

Ken’s Bore, WA

Situated in the remote Western Australian outback, Mungala Resort is an accommodation village to support nearby mining operations established in 2022 by Mineral Resources. With operations in the area commencing, our team were engaged to design a site resort which improves the wellbeing of staff and redefines traditional on-site experience in the mining industry.

The site concept focused on togetherness, with an integrated landscape and thoughtful amenities to promote a sense of community and wellbeing across each space that has synergies with comforts of home. Each of the 500 self-contained rooms includes a queen-size bed, lounge, TV, kitchenette, ensuite, and laundry facilities. A central restaurant acts as the village’s heart, offering a cosmopolitan-style dining experience. Recreation facilities include a 50-metre lap pool, gym with open-floor facilities, and a sunken football oval for multipurpose use, including concerts and events.

Prone to the harsh climate conditions of the Pilbara, the architectural design focused on material durability, with prefinished materials used in the built form to withstand and endure the site environment. In collaboration with Aspect Studio, the landscape design incorporates native plants and natural swales to complement the environment and manage stormwater flow.

At the heart of Mungala Iron Resort was the notion to break the stigma of on-site experiences and set a new benchmark for accommodation that prioritises the health and wellness of staff. The industry-leading project is due for completion in April 2025.
